I live in AZ and am interested in doing a diesel conversion to my '94 D90. The only place that has been recommended is East Coast Rover. Is there a 'West Coast ' equivalent? I'm a new owner and new to the site so if this question has been asked a hundred times I apologize.
Not positive, but I think Jim Pendleton may do them.

Even before diesel fuel prices went thru the roof, it was a no-pay-back proposition. The only justifiable reason, and it's a good one to some, to do the conversion, is that you extend your per-tank range by virtually double.
Basically, all that's required is a bunch of cash. Unless you have a reliable contact in the UK that can source you the correct 300TDI, you'll have to pay thru the nose over here to those who have access to them. You need the 300 TDI/gearbox combination that was used in the defender, not the Disco version, as the bellhousing is very much different, the engine sits way back and you need a huge radiator shroud. Speak to Mark Letorney, at Rovers North. If he doesn't have the goodies in stock, he usually has some on the way. In the UK, you can speak to Foleys or Equicar.
Your existing R380 isn't compatible with the Tdi, as the input shaft is different, as is the Bellhousing. You need to remove your motor mounts and weld in correct mounts. Fuel pump changes, add filters, and some minor electricals. The payback might fall within your lifetime, but thinking that way doesn't matter, since simply owning a Defender isn't a particularly rational act to begin with.

There's also the benefit, IMO, of getting rid of a good bit of the electronics. If you get an older 300tdi, or some other diesel, the only electrics needed is the starter, alternator and preheaters.

Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it Do it, V8's are great but offroad you'll love a Tdi they are simply awsome, i've had mine through water half way up the windscreen no problems. Why not go the whole hog and put a Hs2.8Tgv (powerstroke) engine in, basically a better Tdi.
I know you guys can't import cars easy over there but could you look at maby buying a crashed Tdi from O/S and bringing that in for "parts", could be heaps cheaper.

Pendy over at D90 source dot com is a great installer. I have a buddy of mine doing a 200tdi from a disco into my 94 and all is going well. I just sourced a proper bell housing & Input shaft from a friend in England and used my 380(w4.10s at the diffs).

Say what you want about Jeep, at least their directors are thinking about what the owners are asking for. Offering a diesel conversion kit does several things: Shows they actually give a crap about owners, creates a market, adds new product line, gets people talking about them. +1. I spoken to him and he definitely knows his Rovers. Stu Anderson at Copley Motorcars thinks he's the best on the West Coast when it comes to Rovers. Stu uses ECR on the East Coast for all his big jobs as well.

There is no reason why you cant put just about any engine you feel like into your Landrover. You might be best finding a decent engine that is very common where you are so that you can easily source parts rather than trying to get a 300tdi (or the better 200tdi) from the UK.
You could get a 300 out of a Disco without problem. You may need to ake some alterations to your bulk head, engine mountings and fit an electric fan (and do away with the cowling). I have a 200tdi out of a Disco in my 90 and its the best thing I ever did. They cost a fraction of a defender 200tdi and they are more powerful. For the sake of some very minor alterations to make it fit I wouldnt be scared off.
