Default gear change thumping noise 300tdi transmission

I have been running my 110 defender 300tdi (1996) with a major thump coming from somewhere towards the rear underside everytime i change up in gear, especially when the engine is being worked. The transmission/engine have now done approx 150k miles. I have checked for play in bushes and replaced the suspension this year but fear i may have a worn transfer box or diff. What is the likely cause and treatment ?

Default thumping noise

the noise could be transmission backlash caused by worn axle shafts and drive flanges. Take the shafts out and have a look at the splines and see how much free play you have between the drive flange and shafts, the LR original shafts and not very long lasting. A set of maxidrives could be all that is needed

Whhhoooaa there!

Before you yank the shafts out check your rear prop shaft UJs, these are the usual suspects to clanks and clonks. You'll need to chock your wheels and take your hand brake off to test it. Get under the truck and give each UJ a good waggle. If there is play in the UJ you'll know it.

It could also be the A-frame ball joint as well.

UJs first though!

That's the most common source of clunking in a med/high milage truck.
