Hi Guys,
Can anyone give me a hand here, I have a land rover 90 fitted with a 6.2 v8 gmc engine. It had been running no problems for over a year, then one day it would not start on its own, only when I gave it a spray with easy start. Once it is warm it will start all day long, but as soon as it gets cold again it will not start I have changed all the plugs and checked the injector pump and it does pump fuel through but I'm not sure how much it should use. I have also had the starter overhauled. I have taken it to a few garages and nobody seems to know anything about these engines and end up just giving it back to me as they do not know what is wrong. A friend says it can not be the injector pump as if that was not working properly then the land rover could not run at all, he says it could well be low on compression and to get that tested? If you guys think this is true do you know what psi i should be looking for in every cylinder? Any help would be great as I'm stuck here. Thanks |

My advice would be to post your questions on one of the GM boards. There are some that are way more into diesels than others. Have you taken it to a GM Shop, or one which works on trucks? I doubt you'll get a lot of help here, first because it's a LR sitem ot a GM site, 2nd, because there are not that many Defender peeps on this site, and probably even fewer that have any GM experience.
As for me, I'd like to hear more about your install once you get past the issues it's having. I have a 110 and as I recall the 6.2 block is no bigger than the LR V8. (though heavier) |

Hi, Thank you for the reply, I will try a post on a gm site then, there are not many places in england that deal with gm engines so as yet I have not come across one.
I have been told the same engine is used in fire engines and some fork lift trucks so I will keep looking. Regards |

There are two fuel pumps on your vehicle. One transfers the fuel from the tank to the second fuel pump, which is the injection pump. The transfer pump is powered by a set of contacts in the oil pressure swtch (OPS). The contacts are too small to carry the current required by the transfer pump and the contacts fail. This can cause the problems that you describe. The other issue that may be the problem is the fuel solenoid driver (FSD) also known as the pump mounted driver (PMD). This device fails from heat and it is mounted on the passenger side of the injection pump.

The fuel delivery would be easy to figure out. I have one of these engines and it is the most cold blooded thing I have ever had. Mine did just as you described and it was the glow plugs. If you engine has a block heater installed you could leave it plugged in overnight and see how it starts. I found alot of glow plugs for older Humvee's on Ebay cheap
