Default Help needed 110 Defender Td5

This query is from an acquaintance - he had a garage do a high pressure wash on vehicle - obviously done from above and below vehicle - can you give me any pointers as to where the problem may be and what he should be checking and drying out ??? I gave him the wring plan but he has had no luck thus far ! Excerpt from his mail below -

I did a very stupid thing and allowed a garage to do a proper pressure wash on the chassis and engine of my vehicle. This, to my regret, has now ensured that water has engrossed into the electrical parts with the result of the vehicle only idling and not able to accelerate when the throttle is pushed down (according to the manual water ingress does this, amongst other things). I am now frantically trying to get to all the plugs and sockets on the vehicle, first to dry them off and secondly to try and water proof if possible. Thus, I am looking for info on the wiring plan / harness layout of the vehicle, in order to get to all the plugs and points. My LR has been standing for 2 days now, and it drives me nuts. I have just returned from a 21 day trip through a wet Namibia, with no problems.

Any help would be great - thanks guys !!!

Hi there. I'm afraid there is only one thing you can do.. You need to unbolt the gear box, un bolt the engine mountings, disconect all the electrics, lift the engine out and dump it in a dumpster!!! Then get a proper engine like a 200 or 300tdi and never have a problem with water again

No. Sorry. Seriously. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head (not being a fan of the TD5) is that there is water effecting the air mass sensor. If it ticks over fine but then doesnt do anything when you rev I am guessing that the ECU isnt getting the message that there is more air comming through the intake and there for not providing any extra fuel to make it rev higher.

I've posted your question on a very big UK forum and I suspect there will be an answer in the next hour or so. I'll post it here for you to read.

Here is one answer from the forum. I dont know if you knew but the throttle is electric. So I guess that is what he is refering to with his answer..

"sounds like the throttle position potentiometer.... the bit where your foot is.

try removing the plug and spraying some WD40 into the plug, or even remove the pedal totally and putting it in a warm place for a day or so to dry it out."

Another reply:

"The best bet is to plug it into a diagnostic system and read off the faults. Even if he has to buy a Nanocom it will be a hell of a lot cheaper than an engine change "

I guess the diagnostic system will tell you which sensor is at fault then you can go clean it

More replies:

"They can upgrade to a later type 3 track throttle pedal if they want which are more water resistant than the earlier ones. IIRC they'd need something like Nanocom to re program it.

Cheers

Steve "

"I second Jim's diagnosis and cure. Potentiometer.... "
