Help needed!

Hi, wonder if anyone has any ideas about a problem I have with a TD5 Defender that's covered 27,000 miles! Once it's warmed up the low oil pressure warning light comes on ... but only at idle. The pressure has been tested at 3000rpm and is normal. As soon as I touch the accelerator the light goes out. So far the oil and filter have been changed together with the pressure switch and it's made no difference! The dealer I just bought it from now want to send it to an independant specialist in Hoddesdon who they highly recommend. Any thoughts????

If they tested the pressure at 3000 rpm then they must have tested the pressure at tick-over. Why dont they tell you what that is?
Who pays for the specialists time? If the dealer does then right on. He should do if you have just bought it.
Dont let it go. low oil pressure is a sign of problems in the engine. (not cheap)

if so its there prob

more than likely somthing to do with the copius amounts of electrics in the TD5

hi, there, i've been reading about your problem with the oil warning light, I had the same thing happen to me on my 200tdi disco, I note that your dealer checked the oil pressure at 3k, but it is imperative that the check is done at idle speed. The cause to my problem was turned Cam shaft bearings, having spent quiet a bit of money on a new oil pump, new oil pressure switch, new oil and filter etc.... If I was you, I'd return to either the dealer you purchased it from and insist that this check is carried out, or alternatively, get an independant garage to check it out for you, then take their report to the dealer. I hope this is of assistance...

The TD5 doesn't use shells for the cam,however there have been problems with the oil pumps recently.If they are an authorized dealer,get them to check the service bulletins,technical briefs and service actions.

Get them to drop the sump, and check the oil pump, and in particuallar the retaining bolt

Well, my bosse's Disco Td5 just had his engine replaced, two months ago, due to a failure in the oil pump, that ended up with a cracked carter and lot's of oil spreaded in the engine. Not cheap. His low oil warning light used to be on for a few seconds and/or minutes after the engine was turned on. He never cared about it

For your ideas, they're much appreciated. The dealer I bought it from has booked it into www.ajdlandrovers.co.uk for Tuesday. So hopefully they can find the problem. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to fit a permanant oil pressure gauge so that I could keep an eye in future, does anyone know if that's possible or what's involved? I understand that the electrics are quite complicated on a TD5.

Just thought I'd give you an update ... just got my 90 back from the garage, they fitted a new oil pump and it's now running like a dream They said that a number of TD5's have had similar problems so I guess it might be a faulty batch of pumps fitted at the factory? Anyway I'm now again, thanks for all your input
