Hi, my name is Hugo I’m Portuguese and the proud owner of Land Rover defender TD5, but yesterday e started having problems with the transfer, when I was in motion the lever jumped from HIGH to neutral several times, but in LOW gear everything was normal. Does anyone now what is happening, I like to have an idea before I start the repair.
Sorry for bad grammar but its the best that I can do. My defender is a TD5 and uses maxis mudzilla 35x13.5R16, t-max 12000 lbs winch, front and rear ARB locker´s maxidrive in the front axle and Ashcroft in the rear. ![]() |

Welcome to the group, you have a nice looking Defender.
As for you question, I believe your t/case is jumping out of high range because it is not shifting in all the way, could be the linkage is bent and needs adjustment. Do it jump out of High Range also or just High Range Lock? Mike |

As Mike says, It may be your linkage preventing you from becoming fully engaged, but the underlying problem is the driving, and high range driven gear mesh. There should be about a 20% lead in of about 57-60 degrees on the gear tooth, so that you can easily engage. The remainder (80%) of the tooth face should be smooth and parallel to the axis. What I've seen frequently, is a worn step, about halfway up (each and every) tooth, which prevents full meshed engagement. The step will probably have a slight taper to it, so each on/off of the throttle jogs it further out. Once it hits near the lead in angle, it simply slips off. You can visibly see this if you pull the cover, but you might get a hint, if, after you've driven the truck for a few miles, to get the oil warm, let it sit for a few minutes, then drain off a few ounces of oil , then swish a magnet through the oil and see if you come up with metal. A teeny bit is normal, anymore and you better drop the cover and have a look-see. The good news is it's an easy fix. Hey Mike, When did you become a homey boy? "Do it jump...." . Is Emenem your new hero? |
