Just got a leak on the Y-Pipe welded up (again), and noticed that the exhaust was really running HOT. The coloration is almost purple, indicating that there's way to much heat coming out of the engine. Also, there seems to be just a hint of hesitation when you throttle up the gas. In the fall, I did a tune-up with plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Could there be a missfire in there despite the new parts? Could it be timing related? The engine temperature guage runs in the middle most of the time, but I did get it running about 3/4 last summer on the 95 degree and up days.

too much heat would indicate it's running lean- REALLY unusual for a Rover. Maybe the timing is too advanced.

It's more likely you're running too retarded, not to much advanced. The hesitation is a hint to that too. If it'a way retarded, like firing after TDC, you can wipe out your cats pretty quick. Manual reccomends about 8 dgrees BTDC, but I prefer 10-11 (except when I have to take it to emmissions inspection)

Thanks for the info!!
I think I'll change-out the fuel filter as well as check to see if there's any leaky vacuum lines. These are also things that I heard may have an effect on making the engine run lean. Regarding the timing, I figure I should check it out too as you all have suggested. Although, I've never made any adjustments to the timing since I've owned the vehicle, maybe the prior owner did.
