Default Looking for advice on the Defender 110

So I just got my 2009 Defender 110 SVX last week, and I'm looking for some tips as it's a first for me in many ways...first diesel engine, first truck, and first new car.

I plan to use Mobil 1 and do the first oil change 1000 miles. I know with my brother's Acura TL, this was not recommended as the first batch of oil in his car had additives for the componenents in his engine, so all he did was change the filter at 1000 miles, and then did a complete oil change at 3000 or 5000 miles (i can't remember which). What can any of you tell me about this with respect to the Defender?

Also, what about shifting. I've read about people having to swap out their tranny at 20 000 miles cos they're very sensitive to the way you shift. I figured they didn't know how to drive, but whenever I go from 2nd to 3rd, I often here some noise which makes me think the synchronisers are off. Or is what I'm reading about the tranny true, and that it's very sensitive. I was also told by a Disco owner that you shift gears in the defender like you would in a normal car...you need to do it slowly....like from 2nd to neutral to 3rd, rather than straight 2nd to 3rd.

Anyhow, any tips anyone has out there would be most welcome. I'm a good driver, and super anal, and I want to make sure I'm driving this thing properly...I'm still in the learning phase.

Thx,
aaloak

Congratulations on your new purchase. An SVX no less? Sure know how to instill envy in us.
I haven't heard anyone on the UK boards complaining about the new 6 speed, but if it's anything like any other Land Rover manual gearbox, you need to shift 'gently'. I never force the shifter, just apply enough pressure to let it makes it way on it's own. almost 100K on mine and it still shifts like butter, but many people complain about the synchros and it really comes down to how light you are with your shifting hand.

I tried Mobil One Diesel in my Merc Tdi, and wasn't impressed, and went back to Valvoline.

Terry,

Thx a tonne for the info....I'll be sure to do this.

Are there any other suggestions you have about keeping this vehicle right? I've never dealt with a diesel before, so I'm pretty much in the dark.

You know, it's amazing how many heads this truck turns. Far more than a Mercedes Benz ever would. It's as if I'm driving a Ferrari or something. I liek ot keep a low profile with this kinda thing, so it's a little strange for me.

Thx for getting in touch.

I think I had a brainfart, as I said Valvoline, above, but meant to say Amalie, which is what I run in both the Merc and the John Deere. I can't offer you many tips regarding your truck as it so much different than mine. They still ook the same, except for the 'speed bump' bonnet, but the construction is much improved. Some of the weak points on their construction are still weak points, so stay ahead of rust in the door frames, sills, and steel under bonnet parts. Rust is one tradition which Land Rovers have retained since 1948.Your area is hot so much of the year, just be sure to keep your intercooler clean for maximum output. Change your air filter more often than what they tell you.
Post up a picture when you get a chance. The SVX edition is such a nice looking truck.
