Post Mass Air Flow Meter Problems

I'm having problem with the old (flapper type) mass air flow meter on my 3.5 V8. The car starts up, runs and then at mild warm up starts acting as if a choke were all the way on. This condition continues for a minute or so and then it seems to clear up and drives OK. I've noticed that it tends to stumble coming off of a stop at lower revs, too.

The unit is old and had been opened, so I took off the cover and cleaned the carbon track and contacts with contact cleaner.
Now, what are the best alternatives. I'd like to chuck it and get something newer if possible. Or am I stuck with this type, and if so, what are the best options for simply replacing it?
Thanks for your help and comments,
GSW
