Default Process for importing a 2007 Defender

Has anyone ever imported one of these to the U.S. and successfully put it on the road (as in with a valid tag)? I would be buying the vehicle outright and I would have the title in my possession. I would be purchasing the vehicle new in the UK and I would use a private shipping company to ship the vehicle to the United States. However, the vehicle does not meet the necessary requirements for the USA. I would therefore, have to have the vehicle modified to meet U.S. regs. I understand this would be an expensive project.

I do not know which company I would utilize to modify the vehicle at this time, nor do I know for sure that this is even an option.

I welcome ideas from anyone who feels they have some information they would like to share that might be beneficial to me.

Sorry mate....won't happen.Ever.
You can however import a 1983 from next year and build it to whatever spec you like for 1/4 of the cost. Still a defender. Think about it.

Oh it's entirely possible and legal. I just can't imagine anyone in their right mind spending the amount of money it would take to do it.

I agree 100%. Sometimes people forget how much ridiculous money is floating around. Anything can be had for some $.

How is it possible and legal?

An ICI can only alter a vehicle of similar model and year to the US model.

The only year a D110 was brought in to the US was in 93, only a overseas modle 93 can be modified to US specs.

Check it out, scroll down to the Land Rover part, only D110's made in 93.

I have heard of beating a dead horse but damn.....

There are hundreds of threads on all the LR sites of people who want to bring one in. I haven't seen a thread yet that says I just got my Defender 90/110 to the states, registered, titled, and insured legally.....

Gray Market Vehicles. That's one reason the G500 & G55 are so popular and so expensive. They were first imported by private companies, unitl I guess Mercedes decided they would like some of the action. They still cost an arm and a leg but at least there is dealership support.
So yeah it might be possible but it'll end up costing as much as a G-wagon.

See below. If you're willing to spend the money, you can do it. But why anyone would spend the sort of money required is beyond me.

When I tried to get my hands on a TombRaider 110 Crew Cab that was down here...I was told that the truck can be registered if...

1. Tear the truck down to the frame
2. Rebuild it with new bolts and other parts (for the sake of having reciepts)
3. Register it as a kit car.

Lots of time and money there, but possible.

THats besides the fact it was already under Homeland Security's possesion =(

Gunny;

That's a really interesting document. I was surprised to see that only a model year 97 D90 could be done, not all 94-97 Defenders. I would think that any year that was imported could have been legally imported/converted.

It was a real heartbreaker for me. I did a lot of research and had a real nice 110 that i was serious about buying when i was in Uganda. After several calls to ICI's and doing a lot of homework i bought my SIII instead.

I dont regret buying the SIII, but i would still rather had the 110.

seems like your best route would be to get like an '82 Series III v8, bring it over as a classic car, restore it. it would be titled as a series, but you could make it look pretty much like a defender if you so desired, although I'd personally rather have a Series.
