Exclamation Question regarding Land River Wolf Tyres

Hello,

I know I am a complete novice about Land Rovers and am sorry for invading your site, BUT could anyone on here answer a couple of questions that I really do need answers to?

Why on Military Land Rover Wolf's do they mount the spare wheel on the right or left hand sides of the vehicle, why are they not mounted on the engine or rear door for that matter? What determines where they are mounted?

Also how much does a spare wheel actually weigh?

I hope someone can answer my questions.

Thanks,

Lizzie.

welcome to the site.

I'd imagine ease of access might be a reason to mount them on the side.

I think on the hood they obscure vision a bit, and the rear door hinges tend to suffer on rough roads, etc.

Just a guess though.

No idea what a spare weighs. I know my 35" tires are challenging to lift into the rear cargo area.

Many MOD trucks, though not necessarily the TUM Wolf, are soft tops, having tailboards in place of right swinging rear doors, so it was a compromise to mount them on the side of all trucks. They do inhibit close-in visibility, and even a standard tire, mounted on a standard road wheel is a heft to lift the bonnet. The Wolf rim weighs nearly twice what a standard rim weighs, and military tires are much heavier due largely to thicker sidewalls
I run 255x85R16s on Wold rims and I would hazard a guess they are at least 70 pounds.

Lizzie -
Would you be good enough to post some pictures of your rig for us all to drool over?
All the best,
Todd

I would like to add that I believe safety was a consideration when the spare wheel was removed from the bonnet on Defenders in general. In a collision a wheel and tyre flying through the windscreen cold prove nasty.

Re wheel on bonnet, not relocated for safety reasons , by the time wheel goes thru windscreen in a landrover, anyone inside will have been dead for a while
Landrover found that vehicle was actually faster(more aerodynamic) with wheel on bonnet
It was moved for o/r visibility , also not available on some later model defender due change in bonnet shape to accomodate later engines HTSH
