The pump (yes, there is a hydraulic pump) in the R380 doesn't like anything heavier than Dexron ATF. I use Mobil 1 synthetic .

Thanks how about additive to lessen the dreded 2nd gear grind when shifting too fast..

Edit: Okay after reading and searching other forums the best Oil for the Manual Gear box is MTF94 = 75-85 gear oil and for the transfer box Dextron2 or 3 ..

That's ass backwards, but if you want to believe it, the rebuild kit for the R380 pump is RTC6730, and I'm sure Paul Grant would be happy to sell you and LT230 transfer case.

What "dreded 2nd gear grind' ? I should think if you feel it's a problem "...when shifting too fast.." you wouldn't shift too fast befopre you started puting in 'additives'.

Maybe you might check the manuals under the "Lubrication" heading, or call a dealer

But on the good not about the 2nd gear grind.. After draining all the ATF I put a 24 oz of Lucas auto trans additive and WOOOOW ! the 2nd gear grind action is gone.. Got alot of getting to know this Disco.. Hey thanks for the info TerryS

I put the REDLINE MTL (manual transmission lubricant)in my Disco with a r380 5-speed! I ordered it from Summit Racing. It worked very well! I had 125k when I changed it! I put royal purple in the Transfer case! All of it was expensive, but I think it was worth it!

I have an LT77 in my truck and used Mobil One ATF for years. Whenever I got the least bit aggressive with shifting I always heard the synchros grind. I searched a number of British sites and learned that Land Rover apparently recommended ATF for my transmission to make shifting easier in cold climates. Further investigation revealed that Red Line MTL was the fluid of choice. It's all I've used since. Now, should I get carried away pulling away from a stop light I don''t have to worry about the synchros!

The LT77 is close enought to the R380 that I would recommend you give it a try. If you don't like it, change it. It's not so great an investment that a little experiment is going to break the bank.

Of, and as Terry said, I do have a couple of LT230's should you need one!

I will be trying the MTL by Redline next time .. that would be about a 75-85 wt .. much thicker than the ATF for sure.. One more question folks the filler plug on the R380, is it a torx or just a 1/2 inch drive square?
