Question Rebuild Cost

To those that have taken an exmod or scrapped Defender and completely rebuilt it from the ground up...whats a good ballpark figure for the cost of such a rebuild?

Not including vehicle cost: between $1k-$100k .... depending on how far you want to take it.

Land Rovers (At least the older ones) were never meant to be 'mint', they were intended on being work horses... if you end up buying a defender next year (25yr rule).. do what it takes to get it running and in nice enough condition... I wouldnt try to fully restore/recondition it.. It's money you'll never get back either.. people spend $100k on building a truck, and then end up having a hard time selling it for $20k.

JC, You've seen the pics of mine, b4 and after, so Im not going to put them up again. A wrecked truck can be ( I said can be, not always though) easier than a fire. I replaced all sheet metal forward of the bulkhead, including the bulkhead. ALL wiring was new, new interior (aftermarket seats, takeout panels from RDS, including headliners) Honestly the list is too long to list.
I used almost all genuine, and where I didn't I used better. I took my time (6-8 months) the truck was flat new when done, and not counting the ARB and winch, it was right around 10K.
The 4x4 Center(ex RN guys) and ECR quoted closer to 40K, so you see where the money is; 2/3 labor. 1/3 parts.

Will you be doing the work yourself? What is the extent of the damage? How old is the EX-MOD Rover or Defender? Do you want it stock or moded? These are all factors in any rebuild. I have rebuilt several MOD Rovers while serving in the Army (of course this was on the British tax payers tab). Now I rebuild collector cars etc and have found that you have to look at each veh individually and make a cost est, It is very hard to ballpark it. It is usually far less $$$ to buy one already done. But then you miss out on the "fun" of making it the way you want it.

Good advice RoverRandom. JC just wait it out. It would be far cheaper and MUCH easier to buy a nice 84 and ship it over once the time comes, and it is coming soon! Gordo

Really? And then how much will it cost me when all I really need are a cool wheels and a nice and new body paint? And I'm looking for a store where I can find defender parts, a complete one with different and new parts and accessories.

Need ideas. Thanks much.
