Hi. I'm new to this forum and new to Land Rovers. Was hoping to get some help/guidance and tap into the forum's expertise.
Does anyone have any experience importing refurbished Defenders from overseas? There appear to be a couple of companies in England that specialized in finding 25+ yr old Defenders, doing a ground up restoration and then selling to US market.
Not sure if this is the way to go if I want a Defender. U.S. prices (based on Ebay search) seem to be all over the map - with the condition of the vehicle presumably playing a big role. There is a dealership here in Mass. that specializes in selling original pre-97 Defenders, some with pretty low mileage, but the prices are mind-blowing ($60-80,000).
If I go the restoration route, I can get a vehicle with a modern diesel engine (big plus for me) and my wife can spec out the interior so it isn't quite so utilitarian (big plus for her). But I don't want to spend what will still be a fair amount of money on what ends up being a pimped out rust bucket with a new paint job.
Your advice, counsel and personnel experiences would be appreciated.
BTW - this would not be a primary vehicle, but also cannot be a garage queen. And we would expect it to see at least moderate off road use although nothing overly technical or extreme.
