Put the nut back on but with a few turns left to go before bottoming out. Sit in the drivers seat, and push backwards, firmly but not excessively, on the bottom of the steering wheel with you knees, pulling backwards on the top of the wheel, again firmly but not excessively, and with your other had, give the top of the nut a firm wrap with a lead hammer. The wheel should pop off the tapered spline.
