So a while back the digital mileage on my speedometer quit showing up so I bought a new unit. I changed it out and of course the actual mileage is what the old one reads plus the 500 or so miles on the new one. My question is this: Do i have to have some sort of mileage calibration done to the new one so when its inspected, serviced, etc I won't run into any problems??
TIA, Jason

If you ever want to resell it, you need to have documentation showing the old speedo reading , the new reading and the date of the replacement or you will never be able to sign off on a bill of sale as to the actual mileage of the vehicle.

NO, actually most states will require a special sticker to be filled out and attached to the drivers door frame, keeping the speedo is just an extra form of support. Might want to check with your states motor vehicle dept to get all the info.

It really doesn't matter because most state's title only give you a choice to certify the milage "Shown" is either correct, out of mechanical limits (like an old 5 digit odometer on a car that's gone over 100k, or stating that "TMU" True milage unknown. Even having the old speedo as backup, you won't be able to state that the milage shown is correct. Service will just put down on your bill what the new odometer shows. If and when you were to sell the truck, it's a good thing to have, but equally, the potential buyer can negate that by saying 'how do I know that old busted speedo came from this truck?'
The good news is if you decided to sell the truck, milage isn't as much an issue as condition. Just be sure you clean out all the empty Jack bottles and beer cans. Last edited by TerryS : 02-07-2007 at 08:39 AM. |
