Default Steering issues

ok since i went out into the desert it seems my defender hates me as it has developed a bad steering wobble. i have changed the tyres to new cooper stt so it shouldn't be them, i replaced the steering dampner bushes, but that didn't fix it either. does anyone reckon that the steering dampner might just have had it? If i try to twist it it seems to twist and compress about an inch or so, is this movement normal or should it only move when you actuallly move the steering. Anyway i can's find the wobble because it seems to only happen when you are decellerating through 60/70 kmh and doesn't always happen but i tell you it is that bad when it happens that it is undrivable and you are flat out keeping control of the wheel as it wobble's back and forth violently
anyway if i need to replace the dampner has anyone got suggestion on which one to buy?
cheers

You seem to be describing the "death Wooble". If your steering is OK you dont even need a damper. Most likely your swivel pin bearing preload is way to loose or you have a loose hub. Jack up the front end and see if you can wiggle the wheels from 6 and 12 o'clock.

cheers Kevin, I'll have a crack at it and let you know how it goes. Is this death wobble common?

Not common to occur but well known. I experienced it once in a friends old Series I, very scary.
