TD5 leaky steering box! - Land Rovers Only

Evening all,
My Defender TD5 has a suspiciously expensive oil leak problem, it got worse last week when for no apparent reason it deposited a big puddle of oil on pavement, does anyone have any experience or such a problem, someone tell me its a relatively simple job of replacing a rubber seal, and not what I suspect is probably the case - another expensive trip to Land Rover! Maybe I didnt research well enough before I chose my Defender TD5 but I ve never known a vehicle this difficult to work on, I thought Landrovers were supposed to be home mechanic friendly, anyway, enough ranting, can anybody advise me please?
