Default Transfer Box Problems

Just bought a 90 defender 2.5 tdi and the main gearbox works fine, the problem seems to be the transfer box which although quiet seems like stirring porridge in that apart from high range i can get low range and the lever seems very loose, what steps can i take to repair this.
