Hi, my 300 Tdi 90 has suddenly developed a high pitched whistle/whine which seems to be turbo related. It starts at the point that the turbo cuts in and the pitch increases as more power comes through. The fault was not present one day but started the following day. What I'm trying to say is, it didn't seem to gradually develop. I had to make a 200 mile trip in it yesterday and it started after a mile or so, but didn't get any worse, in fact it had decreased a little by the time I got home. Has anyone got any ideas what it might be? I did think it might be a split in one of the rubber turbo pipes, but I can't see anything wrong with them. Does this suggest that the turbo os goosed?

It does sound like a split in a hose or something similiar. I also had this problem when I hadn't tightened the downpipe bolts to the turbo correctly (easy fix!). Have you lost any power etc? Check all the connections are tight and inspect for holes/splits (Usually tiny, hence the whistle) Does anything rub on any of the pipes?

As above!
Also, by chance did you have the vents open or the passenger window? When I fitted my snorkel I got a marked increase in turbo noise, also funnily enough when I replaced the centre mid boxes of the exhaust system. When a turbo goes you know about it! Either it dissintergrate making a hellofa noise or if the bearings go you'll get oil being pumped in to the exhaust system and the whole world will be lost behind you in a cloud of smoke!

check the seals on the turbo down pipe and intake. I dont drive a TDI, nor have i had a turbo but I have had a lot of experience with boosted applications (i.e. I street raced a v6 centrifugal supercharged mustangs for 2 years). Make sure all the pipes are properly fitted and not cracked, any air or exhaust leak can cause a whistle. I blew my s/c once, trust me, you know when that thing goes, your turbo should be fine.

my I6 cummins diesel has a shitload of turbo whistle, most diesels do. I do have a 62mm turbo though and cold air intake with a 4' downpipe
It's what diesels do, along with giant clouds of smoke that make people think twice about riding your ass
