Hi all, new to defenders and have the choice of these two at the moment.
85 wagon.

Im leaning towards the 3.9 is this a reasonable price?
They seem like a big mechano set and im wondering what parts are interchangable from '85 to the current models.Also the is the 4-speed box better than the 5-speed for Strength, the bloke selling the '85 told me this.
If its a 1997 vehicle that should be a 300Tdi- no problems there. Just check that the cambelt has been changed regularly (90,000 km should be the change interval). Some have head-gasket problems if they're allowed to overheat- check for lack of power, white smoke from the exhaust, low water level in the header tank, and sometimes a 'ticking' from the back of the engine.

Bells & Whistles on the older one make it sound appealing, but you need to know who did the work, and because of those mods, how was it used?
200K miles is a lot of miles, and despite Dualcabs(especially with a tilt) are somewhat impractical, the fact that it's 14 model years newer for the same money says your money would be better put on it, rather than someone elses 'project' truck.

Some very good points.....I can't see why the older one is almost as expensive as the 97.....

the Izuzu motor is really good but the fack that the rest of the truck is so old means that everything else is probly warn out. Especially if the truck has lockers and off road gear that means its been thrashed. go 97 and then mod it.
