How do I wire around an electrical problem in the brakelights in my Defender 90?
I suggest you run a switched lead straight from the battery into a toggle, and then to the rear lights. Each time you stop, just flick the switch and viola! You've got brakelights too - this could be in the Defender section, and also doubled in a DIY format. Great!

steel, sounds like a guy i knew where the turn signal relay was hosed and he just keep flicking the turn signal up and down to make it flash
Serg, was thinking like a seperate section where ppl would not have to try and search for the topics constantly... sorted like forum under the forum... was thinking of questions that frequently come up. ie: obd codes, reset service engine light, how to change your brakes, etc
on another note... great site serg

viola
I thought that was a flower!

If you put a manual switch it will be a traffic violation. If you decide to do an emergency stop in traffic and the car at back runs into you because you forgot to flick the switch? Oh dear.

Repair/change the original switch or fix the fault. It's only a single circuit.

This is a shortend version of the May 2002 Defender Electrical Library.

Fuse 13 of the pasanger fuse box (provides an ignition feed) to the brake pedal switch on a GO wire (Green, Orange),
the brake pedal switch is a normaly open switch, (push the pedal close the circuit make lights go) this allows current to pass allong a GP wire (Green, Purple) to feed on a d90 the LH brake lamp,RH brake lamp, Centre high mounted stop light and the trailer socket.
it's a simple circuit to trace give it a go.
If you have any questions just ask.

Hope this helps in some way.

This is really NOT a recommended fix Sort it properly!

if you need to bodge the circuit to get you going then take a lead direct from the battery pos terminal into the brake light switch (take a look under the dash at the top of the brake pedal armature) then direct to the lamps, do not rely on a manual switch. If this doesnt work then it is the brake light switch that is at fault and replace it.
