Don't you feel just a tiny bit silly coming into a Land Rover Enthusiast site and asking a question like that? Given that most of the 13000+ members are in the US, we've had no exposure to the new Defenders, or Nissan Patrols either, other than what we see in the media. Still, I suspect we might be somewhat jaded.

Don't go away, That's not the sporting thing to do. Stay, and enjoy our obviously biased opinions about Land Rovers. There are a few SA forums and Aussie ones too, where you'll get more valuable (head, not heart) comments. I personally exemplify the owner living with the classic Love/hate relationship with his Defender, but not dumb enuf not to know the Nissan Patrol is an exceptionally good truck with a huge following (I'ts a Land Rover wannabe, how can you hate that?)

Patrol, those arent bad. Parts are easier to get. And arb bumpers arent to expensive. I know even if its a diesel parts can be upgraded from previous model years.
personally I like the patrol better for its engine and torque but the defender is nicer in that parts are the same for the same up to 08 so getting parts and upgrades will be easier on the wallet since they are all the same. But engine parts will be more expensive since they have to be shipped from the UK.

Why does every other country have awesome 4x4s except the US.. I just check out that Patrol for the first time. That is a cool 4x4.
If only the US demand was for off road vehicles instead of mini vans and hybrids......

Be careful; Pete. You're about to see even less true 4x4's on the showroom floors, over the next 5 years. You think our choices are bad now, just wait.

its safety and The fact americans have trucks. Plus, have you seen the roads in Australia? They suck. many of them aren't even paved.
plus its a long way between petrol and diesel stations. You need everything you get. but the offroaders are becoming less and less. people prefer caravaning or going to a resort.

If I would follow my brain I'd buy a Nissan.
Glad I follow my heart instead. That's why I'm driving something that leaks/is temperamental/rusts/isn't very ergonomical and I'm happily married as well.
