Default 1999 freelander engine dying??

hello all....i am well and truly stuck here any tips would be greatly taken
i have a 1800 petrol freelander 1999 its my 1st landrover and i love it until i started havibg problems......the engine keeps dying going down from 40 mph right down to 10mph if i try to rev out of it the engine can cut off......or it shudders and pops a little

i had a new dizzy cap and leads as it had totaly burnt out....still the same

i had a new coil pack fitted as that didn,t look too good...still the same

today i had a new cat fitted as the old one had broken down...still the same

okay its an oldish car and certainly not the top of the range but i am totaly gutted...i do know the guy i bought it off had it sitting on his drive for a few months...could this have lead to my problem?
