Question 2002 Freelander Driveshaft known problem?

My daughter tells me that the dealer has told her that the "driveshaft will need replacement soon" and will be VERY SPENDY! Apparently this is due to some sort of a "pressed in bearing problem". The thing is, she is not very knowledgeable about automotive stuff and feels she is being "lied to" or jerked around by the dealer and she can't even tell me if it is the front or the rear drive shaft and she is about 2500 miles away from me at the moment....SO...can anyone on here tell me if the 2002 Freelander, 2.5 liter with a steptronic auto/manual transmission has some kind of a known driveshaft issue? If so, can I replace the bearings (bearings tend to be standard and if I can get at them, I can replace them maybe), or can I just install a later, maybe updated, driveshaft when I go to visit her in December? I would like to either change the "questionable" bearings, or, better yet, change the whole driveshaft to a newer, updated one if that is possible. when I go to see her, I will have access to a military auto craft shop so will be able to use some fairly specialized tools if needed. Any help will be appreciated and if you have an answer, you can email it to me at dondlhmn@aol.com. Thanks s bunch!!!

What she is refering to is the carrier bearings in the rear driveshaft. Either the rubbers around the bearing separate and the driveshaft knocks or the bearings become real noisey. You don't have to replace the driveshaft. You can get carrier bearing kits from the dealer. Not real bad to install unless the yokes are seized but with a little elbow grease you can do it. I have done many. They just want to replace the whole shaft because it's easier.

How much do these carrier bearing kits cost?
