Default 2002 Freelander knock driver side

I have a tap/knock/fluttering (it changes sound type frequently) that I assume is coming from the drivers side of my freelander. 2002, 68k miles, all maintence and oil changes done. I have heard a lot of nightmare stories about these engines (unfortunately after I bought it). Any ideas what it could be?
