Default ABS modulator faulty?

Freelander gs petrol x reg

My local main dealer after three attempts to diagnose the reason for the handbrake HDC ABS lights being permanently on and the Speedo not working has decided that the ABS modulator needs replacing and have muttered something about £2000. Does that sound feasible as at one time they were talking about the ECU requiring replacement as the reprogramming of the ECU did not cure the problem. Would the above warning lights show if the ABS modulator is faulty? Wouldn't the computer diagnosis show where the fault was so they could have told me what was wrong in the being.

Any advice appreciated
Thanks in advance
DAVID

Default ABS unit they almost give them away

dkph, yup they cost that much, had one fail in 2001 before the 7 year100,000 mile warranty was up. Dealer bill to insurance was $3,100 US. This 95 Disco cost the extended warranty company $17,231 at the end. I'm glad the doctor got the package before me, he was on a 5 year 60,000 lease, mine at 62,000.

That diagnosis doesn't sound right to me - the modulator doesn't handle the WSS signals, so it shouldn't shut down the speedo.

Thumbs up ABS Warning Lights & HDC Lights

The first Freelander I bought - in '98 had the same problem. It was solved by (and don't laugh here) stopping the Car, getting out, locking the car with the remote and then opening it with the key. restart the engine and Hey presto!

It was intermittent and never affected the speedo - so I think that is a seperate problem.

Try it - it's cheaper than 2 grand !

ps I got rid of that Freelander (1.8xei 5dr) due to loud tyre noise and poor performance. My new V6 is a Blast! I couldn't be happier after 85, 000 kms in 2 yrs it's just getting better & better. Especially good fun on the 50km Aussie beaches!

cheers

I've agreed with the local dealer to have the ABS modulator/ecu (they now say it’s a combined unit) replaced total cost £928 +VAT.

Local independent specialist quoted some two hundred less. But the main dealer had fitted an ABS modulator from one of their stock cars to see if that really was the problem. So it has to go back there.

At first we could get the lights to go out by turning the ignition off and this we did for several months but eventually they stayed on and we lost the Speedo too. On one occasion the lights came on while driving so I thought it best to stop. While waiting to turn right into a lay by a young lady drove into the back of us

Otherwise we really like the car only wish there were some 50km beaches around here.

Red face HDC TC & ABS Problem.....

Hello,

I have a 1999 3 Door Petrol (50th Edition), I have just had the ECU replaced as the ABS/TC & HDC lights will not extinguish.

My local LR dealer has now replaced the 'ECU' at a cost of £900+VAT, but after just 2 days, they are Intermittently going on and off when I drive !!

Just spoken to the LR dealer who has now stated that I may need an ABS Modulator replacement and a Firmware upgrade on the ECU !!!

Quoted as £1500+VAT for the ABS Modulator....

Is this a combined unit? can anyone offer more advice before I pay the cash and get rid of the car

Also, I have a severe 'rumbling' noise when turning at slow speeds, the LR dealer has been unable to diagnose this, any ideas?

Regards
