Default Auto tranny sticking in gear

I have a 2001 Freelander KV6 with auto/tiptronic box and lately find that when cold the gearbox sticks in a gear - usually 4th. If I wait for the car to warm up, and restart the gearbox is fine. As this car does not have a dipstick to check gearbox levels its impossible to know if there is enough fluid in it.
Here's where the fun starts - according to the manual the gearbox takes 4litres of fluid, but according to landrover, it takes 8 litres.
Also Landrover advised me that I need to use their ATF as its different to other ATF's on the market - as far as I can see the only thing different is the price!
Has anyone any advice for me?

Howdy,

If it is an ASISN (sp?) then maybe you will need to use the correct fluid. If it is like any of the Volvo gearboxes by the same maker then you HAVE to or SERIOUS damage WILL occur.

Somethin to research!!

If you attempt to use standard ATF, you will kill the tranny, they must Run on Rovers ATF only.

The box is a Jatco 5 speed,it MUST have the right oil in it as Mike says.It is controlled electronically via solenoids in the front of the box behind the vertical "sump". It should be possible to resolve your issue without to much work/expense.The solenoid valves are all available separately, and can be replaced with the box in situ, sounds like one of them is sticking. The LR tests for solenoid resistance arent much help because they only tell you that the coil is OK - not that the valve actually operates.
I think there is more info,FAQ's etc on Ashcroft transmissions website - they are very good, only dealing with LR transmission products, good luck !
