junkyard or the dealer,

try to talk the dealer into a good price, you need to drop the engine from the bottom,

trust me, fix the engine and sell it.

Without a warrrantee a freelander is a white elephant.

especially 02s and 03s

personally ID stick with a disco two, less to go wrong that will leave you stranded.

Same thing hapened to me. Timing chain broke on my 02 discovery. Broke the timing chin cover and now the engine runs like crap. The shop said they are going to take the heads off and send them to the head shop. I hope it runs after that because I am going to sell it to the next sucker that wants a Land Rover. These things are over priced pieces of JUNK. I dont care about anybody's opinion about how thats what you get when you buy a luxury euro car. That still doesnt change the fact that its an overpriced piece of junk. Im going back to toyota or Jeep, where you can get a new long block for less than $1000 not $6000 or $7000 for a 4.0 LR short block.
Oh and why cant they make it so you can get the frigin fan off without much effort.
Ok im done venting.
Here comes the firing squad.....

aparently if the timing chain breaks your engine might not be damaged too bad. Mine runs with the bent valves. The shop is going to replace the bad valves and i should be good. Just dont turn the engine over while the chain is off. I think I may have done that......very stupid. Oh well, Im only paying $600 in labor for all the work on the heads, take off put back on, even reseating some new valves.
oh,, this is on the 4.0, 2002 disco 2
