Default Freelander 2.5 v6 good or Bad

I am thinking of getting a freelander 03 2.5 v6
I have read that the 1.8 is not so good so what about the v6 is this any better and has it got the same faults as the 1.8 (Head and cylinder sleaves)
any info on the v6 would be good David

For your sake, I hope you come to your senses before you part with your cash. The 1.8 wasn't available in the US, only the V6, but while it wasn't bad at first they all eventually fail for stupid reasons, like blown cam plugs, clogged vent tubes. While many, if not all, true Landie Lovers seem to willingly fork over huge amounts of cash to keep their cherished ride on the road, or trail, the problem with the Freelander is that spares are rapidly dissapearing. Engines and gearboxes, Viscous couplings, they're all going the way of the Dodo bird.

HI Terry
Thanks for the reply parts in perth are not at all hard to get but I am sure that this will change. The 1.8 engine is very hard to get and if you can find one it will cost about $7000. Not sure about the v6. David

I was recently told, by a Land Rover employee, that LRNA has NO V6 engines for the Freelander.

Default V6 - on to my second one !

gonna add my 2 cents here - have a 2001 3dr V6 here in South Aust - with 300 kilometres short of 60,000 klm on the clock and last month it stops dead at the intersection - no compression - no oil in the top half of the engine - basically pushed the well oiled bottom end thru the very dry top end - cost $5,200 for a rebuilt V6 (thanks to Triumph Rover Spares in Lonsdale SA for supplying an engine promptly)

like others have posted, love my lil Landy and will keep it as long as i can but jeez not sure i could find the cash again to replace it - hoping the gearbox isnt next to go (touch wood)

changed the brown/teal interior to all black leather - lots of freelanders at TR Spares with perfect chassis, bodys and interiors - but no engines !! doesnt paint a pretty picture - LR you may want to stick with BMW engines !

Even though the XTrail isn't available in the US, I have rented them while we're in Tortola, and it's a VERY nice truck. Oddly, our frineds, who run the car rental place ( and own the oldest Land Rover dealership in the Carribean) no longer rent out Freelanders. Thye had 3, and we rented one of them for several years, but all three have been taken out of their mini-fleet and sold. They were all 1.8 Petrols, but have been replace with 3 XTrails
