Default Freelander 2002 A/C Problems

Yesterday, I turned on the air conditioner for the first time this year and I only got hot air in my face. My mechanic took a look under the hood and said he thinks it's probably a lack of a/c gaz. But he doesn't do that work himself. As I have never re-filled the gaz since 2002, it seems plausible to me. Can anyone confirm that it's normal to re-fill the a/c gaz? Or could there be another, more serious problem? Thanks.

Well for what it's worth, I had this happen. Went to the local mechanic two months ago and it simply needed a recharge for $140. Mind you, this was a random mechanic, not the LR dealer. Looking under the hood, this seems to be an easy enough job.
