Freelander alarm problem on car ferry

On a recent cross-channel ferry, I had a problem which I think was due to the alarm system. On returning to me car for disembarkation, I could not open the doors with the Zapper, the battery and all the instrument lights were dead. I had locked the doors with the key, as I thought this activated only the doors, not the movement sensor. I have had no problems either before or since, though I did leave the doors unlocked for the return journey.

Has anyone had the same problem, or offer me any advice?
