freelander transmission noise - Land Rovers Only

own a 1.8 freelander excellent motor only recently when reversing it is making a loud whining noise, is this a common problem or should i get proffesional advise? it seems to be getting worse, please any ideas.

Thanks disco mike, took it to a garage and needs a new gearbox, they say its yet another weak point!. think i will sell after this its been one thing after another with this vehicle.
