Default Gas Mileage Question ????

I am wondering what kind of mileage I should be expecting from a 2002 Freelander AWD with 60,000 miles and 2.5L V6. I was under the impression that it should be somewhere around 21 mpg, instead it seems to be getting closer to 13 mpg with all highway driving. It is baffling, my 2004 F250 Diesel 4x4 is getting better mileage than this thing and it weighs 7,700 lbs.

I would like to add that it is also continuously giving the code of P1472 but i have since read to ignore that code.

Does anyone have any ideas why it is getting such poor mileage? It is currently running good, as I have repaired all the vacuum lines and the Service Engine soon light is no longer illuminated.

Where else should I look to improve mileage and get it to where it should be?

I have no idea what the mpg should be on a freeloader but I cant tell you that your mileage is the same as my lifted with 33" tires V8 range rover classic. So something is definitely wrong and given that code is known to cause a loss of power above 3000 rpm and loss of fuel economy maybe it's time to fix it or enjoy the gas guzzling.

2003 Freelander. I drive 160 miles each day all highway. I have 193000 on the odo, 55,000 on a new engine. Driving 75 mph, I average 19 mpg without the air conditioner on. 17 mpg with the ac on. Once I lower speeds to 60-65 (where I can) mpg goes to 20-22. I drive Michigan highways. Goodluck driving slower than 70 mph.

I drive an 03 Freelander SE and I usually average 22-26 mpg. That's with both highway and street driving. When were the spark plugs last replaced? The air filter?

When you step on the gas, does the truck struggle once your past 3k RPM? Think the code you have means you need to have your VIS motors replaced.

We average at least 250 miles to the tank, all city driving on 87 gas.

Crikey! my 1.8 manual does 9l/100km when I drive like a nutcase and take it offroad. Not sure what that is in MPG but its well over 30 (My duratec Taurus did 10l/100km). I would have expected better than 21mpg from a V6 auto too...let alone 13. Only thing that drives the fuel usage up is going over 120km/h (70mph ish), but would expect the lower-revving v6 to cure that. I run my Freelander on 95 or 98 octane because the power, economy, and longevity gains offset the cost.
Is the transmission buggered? I have recently been driving a Ford Falcon with a high mileage and very rough auto...the engine runs mint but the auto takes fuel economy from the expected 12l/100km to 19l/100km - F-series territory.

I have a 2002 SE with over 70k on the clock. I get 340 miles per tankful, which works out to over 22 MPH, city and highway combined.

I think my fuel mileage is about average from whet I've gleaned form others with the same vehicle. 13 or 14 MPG even with all city driving can't be normal.

The average fuel is 17 Miles per gallon in the United States. Consider, however, that nearly half of all consumer road vehicles or "cars" in the US are light-trucks.
