It's rubbish isn't it? Mine's a 1.8 manual and gets about 30mpg...the same as a 4.0 auto Ford Falcon with more than double the power. I'm starting to be of the mind that once mine is fixed I will put it up for sale and swap for a "gas guzzler" because I would rather have the slightly worse economy and rangie/disco comfort. There's lots of people wanting to downsize atm so should be easy to get good value. A P38 HSE sounds like my cup of tea.
