Just Purchased Freelander :(
Well as the title says we just purchased a 2002 Freelander with 60,000 miles for what we thought was a good price. My wife wanted it really badly, so of course we had to have it. The salesman at the lot reassured us that they were a very good vehicles and that it had no problems. I researched consumer reviews and they all looked good, so we bought it.
On the way home after about 25 minutes of driving the check engine light came on and I got that sick feelings to my stomach. As soon as we got home I got out the code reader, and go 2 codes P0171 Too Lean Bank 1 and P1472 VIS Motors. When I restarted the vehicle I heard a faint vacuum leak that I had not heard when test driving it before. I raised the hood and quickly found a broken vacuum line (that someone had fixed by wrapping it with electrical tape). I replaced that and reset the codes.
After this quick fix, we drove the vehicle for another 2 days with no codes. Last night the Check engine light came on again, I checked the codes and it was the same ones again P0171 and P1472. This morning I took the air filter assembly off again and found more broken vacuum lines. This time it was the PCV lines broken at the T (once again wrapped in electrical tape). I am assuming the previous owner done this so that they could trade it in, and I really hope the car lot would not have done this.
I am assuming and hoping that the broken vacuum lines are causing the lean condition and not something else. I have found a post about rebuilding the VIS motors and intend to tackle that when I find the time.
I am assuming these are very common problems, as I have found numerous posts about the same things occuring to others that own the same vehicle around the same mileage.
Is there anything else that I should be looking for or redesigning before they lead to more problems.
I am going to go through all the vacuum lines in the upcoming weekend and replace all the brittle plaster with rubber. I am also going to install an Oil Catch Can to keep the oil vapors out of the intake, as others have suggested.
Is there anything else that anyone would suggest to go ahead and look at while I have everything apart under the hood.
Also the engine is very smooth other than a faint rattle from the intake that I only heard after we drove it for about two days so I am going to have to tackle that task as well.
