K Series head gasket procedure - Land Rovers Only

What is the procedure advised by Land Rover when the head gasket has gone and needs to be replaced, can anyone advise on the proper action that is to be taken when head gasket is to be changed.??

What exactly needs to be changed/replaced when it is being done, so i can ensure it is done properly, as i have my Freelander 1.8 XEI booked in at my local garage to have it done next week.

I have been told by my local service dealer garage that the engine has to be degunked inside the water pipes, etc.. head gasket to be changed (obviously), dowls need to be changed, head bolts need to be changed, ans also the cambelt why they are at it.!!

Is this all correct.?? or is there something else that also needs to be attended to.??

The price i have been quoted for this is £480 + V.A.T does that sound about right.??

Hello,
The head dowels have to be changed but they are supplied with the head gasket,i would always change the head bolts as they are the stretch type,LR do also recommend the cam belt to be changed when a head gasket is done.It sound like you have water/oil mix which will require a full flush to clear out,the worry is it may be the liner(s) may have dropped and not the gasket failed.The tech should as a matter of course check the head for warp and the liners for stand-proud.

Hi there m8 i have worked on K series engines for 3 years now in he rover cars. u Need to change the headgasket, dowels. you dont need to change the belt or the bolts. rover have made a inlet manifold modifcation for when the head gasket goes. Make sure thety but a new header tank cap/ radiator cap on becasue the valve in side will have gone. You will need to have the oil and cooland system flushed out. Make sure the get the head skimed and pressure test it or it will be a waste of time doing the headgasket. If you have any problems just ask. Were u from.

I also have worked on the K series since the introduction of Freelander.As per the LR workshop manual,the bolts should be checked for any signs of damage and replaced if necessary and the timing belt renewed.
