Default Looking into buying freelander

Being the proud owner of a 2000 disco II I have finally talked my fiance into purchasing one. The only kicker is that she wants something with a little better gas millage and a little smaller. I said great we'll go with a freelander.
Just wondering if some of you owners could give me some insight on these rides. Are they prone to trouble or are they about like any rover? (dependable but when they go you better be ready to spend some money)

We are looking at an 2005 two door with 57K miles on it
here's the pic
AutoTrader.com

And also looking at an 2003 G4 freelander with 88K miles
and the pic of the G4 edition

Please tell me what you think.

Thanks,

All things considered, I would probably suggest something other than a Rover if you're shopping for a "smaller, better mpg, better reliability, cheaper to maintain" kind of ride. I know that's blasphemy, but who is going to service this vehicle? I own a D-1 and twiddle with something on it almost weekly, just so the list doesn't become unbearable (and the thing still runs) 6 months from now. I love my old D-1; don't misunderstand me, but I'm not sure I would want that same sort of arrangement for my spouse, who tends to be a "turn the key and go" sort of person. Land Rovers aren't for everyone.

It's my understanding the 02's had some MAJOR problems.

My gal, loves working on cars and enjoys a little challenge. We both know how Rovers can be. We have spent many saturday nights underneath my truck rather than at the movies or out somewhere. I'm just wondering about the reputation of a freelander.

Exactly what we're looking for. The only kicker is how much would it cost to ship it to North Carolina? lol

I own a 2003 Freelander. I would recommend you take serious look into Freelanders and some of the issues that have been noted. Don't get me wrong, I love mine and currently have over 230,000 miles on it. Second engine at 154,000.

just be aware some of the items may be the heater core leaking. window regulators break. Engine replacement due to "issues". There are a lot og great Freelanders out there, just do your homework. Watch coolant level. It tends to disappear.

I get 20mpg average.
Rides great.

Thanks silver. I would love for her to get the g4 edition which she likes, but she is hooked on the two door model. I have no idea why, i personally think it's ugly. But whatever it takes to make her happy!

I love my freelander ('04) but I've had all the big issues (IRD failure, heater core replaced, trans problems, engine replaced at 63k) and WOULD NOT RECOMMEND that anyone buy a used one. 57K is well in the range of where most people have seen major problems plus that is close to the 72K service - big $$$ and not to be skipped (timing belt replacement) and not something that you will want to try and do yourself. A new engine, if you should need one, is hard to find and used ones may not be any better than one it is replacing.

That said, I'm sure plenty of FLs are out there soldiering on without any major problems - 'silver' has done well with his. If your fiance has her heart set on one, make sure you get one that has been well maintained and includes the service history.

I might suggest a RAV4. We had an '04 that we liked pretty well.

All USDM freelanders are piles of shit. The engines are horribly built, transmissions are junk. No need to do the 72k service with timing belts because the engine doesn't last that long.
