I bought my 03 freelander 10 daysa ago. I really like how it drives. Howeever, I noticed when i start it that engine makes a noise. It drives well but i just want to know why it is not quite. I'm thinking if it is timing belt that it is starting to wear out or something else. the car has 78,759 miles on it. any insights would be appreciated. thanks

What engine do you have? Can you describe the engine noise?

You should find out if the timing belt has been done, the consequences of a belt failure are EXPENSIVE.

when the car is parked for a long time( cold start). it is like deisel car noise. the engine is 2.5 v6 2003 freelander

mine sounds like that, especially when it is cold, like this morning. i've only about 20,000miles (replacement engine). may just be normal freelander engine noise.

that isn't to say that you shouldn't investigate whether the timing belt was done. very important that it is done.

I have owned a Freelander KV6 for about 2 years and have had exactly the same problem.On investigation, it is a common one where the plastic valves in the Air Intake Manifold wear. The bad news is it can not be repaired but you have to replace the complete unit. - expensive!
It does not affect performance, but does make the car slightly higher fuel consumption.

i went to the dealer and had them check that noise, they foun not problem with engine . so i think it is common noise on FLs, and you just need to leave with it. i think you are right it affect fuel consumption. they say it 21mpg on highway but it seems less then that when i drive it

I have a 2002 Freelander SE V6 2,5L with 65k miles and the same problem. On cold starts sometimes the Check Engine Soon light comes on and there is very little power. The codes says misfire on the 5th cylinder. I had the intake manifold changed (at the dealer's advice) and two mornings later the same thing happened again. I notice when the engine is cold (and the Check Engine light does not come on) the motor runs rough. Once warm it sounds perfect. We checked the PVC valves and one was leaking so we replaced it. We are still looking into the problem of the misfire on the 5th cylinder. One member of this community suggested the head gaskets. He says they like to leak. Antifreeze gets into the cylinder and upon start up you get either a rough start or check engine. Once burnt off, engine runs fine. Any comments, please post!
