Default New problem - oil in water

I now have a new problem that came out of nowhere! Its a Freelander KV6 2001 and all of a sudden I found the water filler bottle full of oil.
I drained the water system and refilled but after about 50km the water is full of oil again. I have spoken to a landrover garage who suspect it to be the oil cooler that is leaking. There is no sign of water in the oil.
Is there any way of checking to see where the leak is? and is it common for an oil cooler to start leaking.
As we are all well aware, landrover parts are not cheap, and I dont want to start replacing them unless I'm sure.

Is it possible that you blew a head gasket and the oil is mixing with the coolant? I'm not very familiar with the Freelander engine, sorry.

you could pressurize the oil cooler separately from the system if it drops then its leaking,

if it doesnt, then a sleeve has dropped.

Is it a k series engine?? 1.6 or 1.8? If it is you may be you head gasket. It is a very common problem with the freelander. Good luck.Get it fixed and move it on out of your life as she will keep costing you long term.Even with the new style head gasket you may very well have the same problem again...soon. Good Luck

Default Fixed

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the advice. I disconnected the water hoses to the oil cooler and bypassed them. Then started the engine and oil leaked from the water side of the cooler. Replaced the oil cooler ( about 40 pounds) and all is well for a while. Thanks again

The dealership replaced my wifes '02 V6 oil cooler too. It was leaking withing the cooler. Wish It had been a inexpesive as your repair. Seems to me I recall it was about $350.

Default leaky engines

made in america,!K Seal, tried it ,it worked for me,now put it in all my motors as standard on purchase.think its teflon, not sure though,Kalimex, greetings from the uk,I have a td4,2001,had slight problem recently with it not starting after it had cooled a bit after a journey, put it into the local lr dealer,he found nothing wrong,so i have had to sort it myself, because it seemd to be a temperature thing,it checked all the stats,no problem, anyway, eventualy found the problem by elemination,I sprayed the sensors one at a time each time it happened, with pipe freeze,{plumbers use it}this took the sensors back to cold, the cam sensor was the problem, when its cold it great, hot its great, warm its crap, hope you all have a good day, percy
