I just took my 2002 freelander to the dealership. Found out my service engine light soon was on because my vent tubes were cracked. They want $1400 to fix it. I'm a novice at this stuff...is this super necessary to fix? Is $1400 dollars a reasonable price? The car is running just fine, no weird problems with it other then the light being on it self.
You mean PCV tubes or Vent tubes on the fuel tanks.
if it is the PCV tubes I know exactly what they are trying to diagnose.
1400 dollars sounds like the addition of the Intake plenum.
they also cause problems and rattle alot.
but they dont cause major issues that wont disable the vehicle. Just get real annoying.
The PCV tubes need to be replaced. If not they will cause 0174 and 0171 codes along with a few misfires. Oddly enough the engine doesn't have bad coils at all.
the tubes you can do yourself. The big one is easy and the little one isnt too bad either. Anyway, Do live in an area that gets really cold? With temps below minus four degrees below Zero.
Yeah, I live in Michigan. So it does get cold. I think you are right on on the repairs. This is what my estimate said when I picked up the car yesterday:
Service engine soon light is on. Diagnosed as faulty plenum and vent tubes.
Traction control light and steep decline light stays on. Diagnosed as faulty brake switch and shifter assy.
Parts needed:

I guess I could replace the hoses...but you think leaving the plenum will be ok? I know the dealer said it had a small crack in it...and that was all. I'm just surprised since the code LBK000120 is the upper intake manifold. So does that mean the whole things needs to be replaced?
No you need to reset the codes and adaptions. Its possible without resetting adaptions it could come back.
Heres the deal, to prevent oil seal blowout in the winter time the crankcase gets frozen in the 02s. it either breaks the pcv lines, blows out the oil dipstick or worse blows out the cam shaft seal whilst driving.
Judging by the prices there are two lines that need to be replaced. Replace those two but there is a third set up that is replaced as a complete set.

He didn't understand why the dealship would want me to replace the entire manifold. He said that all I need is 2 new vent tubes + both the manifold motors replaced. Total cost at 434 dollars. The O2 sensors were running a little rich...but they do not need to be replaced at this time.
Well, the state of Michigan does not enforce any kind of inspection...so I should be good regardless.
It seems like 434 is a reasonable price to get this problem solved...so I went ahead and told him to fix it. I was going to have him quote me a price for the O2 sensors as well, but I haven't heard anything back on that yet. The motors will take a week to get here...so I'm not in a hurry.
