The cam belt is due for replacement at the 72,000 mile service. As you need to remove the belt from the water pump in order to replace the water pump, then you may as well change the cam belts (3 off) at the same time while your in there.
The work doesn’t need to be done by a main dealer, but is does need to be done by someone with the correct tools to hold the cogs whilst removing the cam belt. If it’s put back incorrectly then as it’s an interference engine, it’ll stuff up. In the UK few garages have the correct tools. Also out of those I’ve found that will do a cam belt change, few will give a warranty on it.
It’s not a job I’ve done so far, but it is one I’m looking to do myself in a few months. The sealy kit vs1290 on ebay is the ideal kit to buy, or a similar one “rover kv6 setting” on ebay will find them.
LR main dealers have the tools to do the job properly. Some independents have them, but some of the bigger ones don’t. I was quite openly told by one who said a v6 cam belt change is rarely asked for at his garage. Some ex rover garages will do the job for you. It is a rover kv6 engine after all. Book price is 5.1 hours labour for the complete belt change. It's just as easy to take out the engine as it is to do it with it in. Thats what the LR dealers tell me.
If you change the front belt then do the other 2 also. It’s up to you if you replace the tensioner and pulleys. Spin them and see if the bearings etc have gone. Some change them as a matter of course whilst they’re in there.
There’s a write up on a rover 75 kv6 cam belt change in car mechanics magazine July / Aug 2008 edition.
