Default gear box removal series 3 lightweight

Hi,
I have read that it is possible to remove the g/box from underneath as the x member unbolts. Can anyone confirm this, I would be keen to do it this as I have to do it in a field, using a wheeled hoist would be tricky on soft ground. Any advice appreciated. Have also read using EP 140 is effective in a noisybox anone tried it?

Tis indeed true the Lightweight like *most* military Land Rovers has a detachable gearbox crossmember for easier accessability/speed of repair. Wouldn't use EP 140, the box wasn't designed to run on it, your better off finding out the cause of the noise rather than trying to mask it.

I can most definitely confirm that the cross member is SUPPOSED to unbolt........

you can remove from underneath. might help to have a crane on hand to lower the box down through the seatbox onto the ground complete with the crossmember. You might have to raise the whole landy up on chocks to give enough clearance to pull the gearbox out (the gearlever might have to come off first). The crane will be handy to get the new one back in. If you want to make the thing lighter you can split off the transfer box first before dropping the box. Cross member is usually easy to get off as they tend to be soaked in oil anyway!
