I have totally dissassembled and rebuilt this truck and I did it with the intention of keeping it, so it's fair to say I put more effort into it than I might have if I originally planned to sell. I wouldn't have done less to it for anyone else, but it's fair to say that when you're doing one with the thought of keeping it, you tend to pay more attention to the minute details.
In looking for a good candidate, I ended up going all the way to WV to get this one. It then went onto a new frame with new parabolics, new brakes and brake lines, stainless flex lines, ball joints and shocks. Tires are new too, and yes, I know they look skinny too, but that what they did back then. The wheels are NAS110 rims, and my son wants to put them on his Stage One, so you get standard 6.5x16s. I even have a set with nice BFG All Terrain TAs. The rims are gray, but if you want them Limestone, give me a couple hours. All the wiring is new, as are most of the lamps. So are all the hoses and thermostat. The heater works as well as it did when new, the ducts and defroster hoses are new, but I'll never drive one of these year round,as I did for 10 years, MANY yeras ago. Bulkhead is sound, and painted seperately, after many prime coats. RH wing skin was rough, so it was replaced with new. Each panel was painted off the car (Conniston Green, with apologies to the purists) and put back together with ALL new grade 8 automotive hardware. There was (still is) a ripple in the LH rear skin and I decided to leave it, because A) it's not bad, B) I didn't care to get into breaking spotwelds and C) I couldn't find a new one then. The top is new, as is the hoopset and tailgate. The seats are excellent. The galvanized trim is great. New windshield glass, new door seals, new window tracks. There is a Fairey installed, in good order. The engine does NOT smoke, starts Instantly, and has a new 8:1 unleaded head. The gearbox stays in whatever gear you put it in. The drive shafts have all new U joints, the diffs have new seals. I learned along time ago, and put on many previous two and a quater engines, that a Carter YB carb, made for the military M38 jeeps is vastly better than any Solex offered today, as well as Zenith varities. So, It has an NOS YB on it. The engine idles so well you might try to start it again, even though it's running. It has great oil pressure, showing on a new NOS Smiths butterfly oil pressure/water temp guage. The speedo doesn't work, but I know the cable is new, I was just to broke to go get a new one, and I'm not too worried about getting pulled over for speeding. If you want to know how slow you're going, I'll get you a new speedo. ( having said all that, it will keep up with the right lane on the interstate) Anyone serious can come and drive it, I'll even get you up onto some trails. If you, like I, think having lots of Land Rovers is OK, rest assured, my wife will take what I get for this one, add it to her Freelander, and get a new LR2. They loaned her one while her's was being service, and loved it. I admitted that I didn't hate it, and that's saying something. Oh, yeah. I'm asking $10,750, but will not throw you off the place if you make a sensible offer. Trust me when I tell you, I seriously think thats alot less than I've put into it, and, I might add, I do good work. I did say Hard top also, so I'll throw in a good (choice of 2), not dented, HT and rear door. If you live way far away, yes, I'll ship it, but you'd be a fool not to come and see it first. |

I feel like a foster parent must feel when their charges move on. The upside is that it frees up cash and room to do another one. Problem is, they're getting harder and harder to find in an economically viable condition for restoration. I do these more for fun than anything else. God knows, you never make money when you do it to that level of detail. It's good therapy, but there's no point in putting a rediculous price on one, having it sit around, and driving the price up unrealistically for everyone else. Parts availability and simplicity of construction make Land Rovers the most rewarding for me. I'd rather do one of these well, than a mediocre job on something else.

Snooze you lose; I snoozed and lost. That is a great truck at a great price. I had been eyeing it for months and couldn't pull the trigger. Congratulations to TerryS and the smart buyer.
