I've done TONS of research about locking diffs and the two best options IMHO for a daily driver and trail rig is Toyota's E-locker and ARB's AIr Locker.
If it's a dedicated trail rig I think the Detroit would be my choice. I know of a few people that actually like running on open axles (both outside of the Rover world and within the Rover community). I havent sat and pondered about open axles yet but can someone state the advantages of running open?

When speaking to Bill @ GBR about what the best decision would be for me D2, he recommended Detroit in rear w/ HD half shafts.. trutrac in front .. 4.11 gearing.. (with the pre-assembled 3rd members, it ended up being around $3500).. He said there is just less things to go wrong with the Detroit then the ARB...

yeah, there is less to go wrong, but... as remote a chance as you have of breaking Bills axles, and I mean remote! It'll tear your detroit to pieces, and you will have to fork over the money to buy a new one, along with the broken axles... Chris at ARB had a little seminar at the National Rally. He answered everyones questions about every type of locker you could imagine, from ARB's to McNamara. In his opinion, open is best for somwhere in the ball park of 90% of the time, (depending on terrain of course). But for the little amount of time where you can actually use a locker, he said It was up to driver preference... In conclusion, if ARB's work for the Aussie outback, then they work for me!

Open is too easy to break thanks to the crappy carrier. For the $$ I've spent on 2 diffs (open & 265s) I could have gone ARB and gotten a much stronger carrier..and then move the weak pt to the axles.
ARB is proven..Detroit is proven.....1 is seclatble and not much more $$$...so easy choice for me...ARB Now where did I leave my wallet... ![]() |

ARB seams to be the best all around locker. most of the time open works great and sometimes even advisable over lockers but there are those times when you need to be locked to move forward. personally i'll save my money to get ARB, i like to have a choice.

ARB sounds like the better choice, and ofcourse is more expensive. I am not sure, but I probably will be going Detroit when the time comes.

I use ARB. Though I respect the detroit/tt combo, not having to worry about it or flick a switch. I just prefer the selectivity, especially in a rig that's driven on the street in adverse weather conditions, and even more especially in winter. I can't imagine too many situations where open is better. Come to think of it, I can't think of a single one. If money were no object, who would opt to run open diffs?? ![]() |

I just moved to Colorado this year and have been in 2 good snows so far, the Detroit seems to be OK in the snow which was a concern when I first got here, time will tell. Mike |
