Default Axle comparison...

Being a newbie to the Rover world, and having come from a long past of Jeeps of all sorts, what would the Dana equivalent of a Disco II's axles be ? Similar to the D30 front and D35 rears of the YJ's is what I am assuming...any tire larger than 33" is almost guaranteed to destroy them in a bind. At least that is my basic rule of thumb for my builds. I am looking at eventually moving up to the 33"-35" neighborhood, and am wondering if I should just drop D44's under it, or run a Yota type 3rd member with heavier shafts.

I'm running 33" on stock shafts now on my 2000 D2 with only one cv destroyed, and I diid that winching a tree off a trail.
For up to 35" you can get heavy duty axle shafts and cv's.
Your spiders will be the weak link, I replaced mine with True Tracks before they grenaded. With larger tires a lot of people will tell you you need to change your gears. I didn't and I'm fine with that for now.
Search for Justin at Lucky 8 but don't tell him I told you that, I have a reputation to uphold.

I was looking at trucks last night and the dodge ram 1500 has a 3.55 axle ratio, ram 2500 3.73, and Toyota tundras 3.9. Rovers are 3.54.. A lot people with rovers bump up to 4.11 when they put larger tires on

he's askingwhat the strength of the axles is in comparison to a Dana axle. from what i've head, it's very similar to a either a D30, or a D44 with standard shafts. i can't rememebr exactly which.

also, you have to take into account the rover's 1.2 high range, effectively making your overall gear ratio numerically larger. so, multiply 1.2times 3.54, and you get around a 4.25 overall gear ratio. other makes, such as a land cruiser with 4.11 diffs and a 1:1 high range, the overall ratio would be 4.11.

either way, with a 4.6, 33's are just fine. however, with the DI, if you would want all your power back, then 4.11s (really an overall ratio of 4.9:1) would be in order. this way, you can compare what ratios and size tires other people are using on their trucks.

i would like 4.11s for around town, but really it's fine. i'll do HD axles and new spiders (in the form of a detroit locker, most likely) before changing gear ratios.

IIRC from past reading they are equal to the D44 once you replace the weak spiders.

I agree, with a locker/ more spider gears and HD 24 spline axles you are in the D44 league.
