Default cheap tow straps?

I want to get another/spare strap. After this weekend's event with the Redneck Bronco recovery I realized I need to have a spare since there is some slight fraying due to that jackass' leaf spring. (incident can be see there Bronco Recovery Fail and more...)

I went to several "off-road" shops in Auburn, all they offered me was a 6klb strap that was 20'....I laughed and said good luck towing a little ford ranger with that and left.

Normally I would just make a trip to Northern Tool and pick up a solid 20k-30k 30' tow strap for cheap. but since there aren't any around here in Bama who has some suggestions?

I'm looking for stores that may have them or websites that take paypal who sell them.

I've already checked walmart, advanced auto, and autozone...nothing

The super wal-marts in my area have wised up and carry some decent straps now. They offer a 20klb and a 30klb strap, both are 30ft long. 4WP ( www.4wheelparts.com) carries the same straps (different brand name) for the same prices. $25.99 for the 20klb, and $35.99 for the 30klb.

Its not a snatch strap, but with loop ends and 20klb-30klb ratings they aren't bad for the price.

If you've already got a tow strap, I'd recommend in getting a jerk strap.

A jerk strap is more like a huge rubber band. When doing a recovery, attach the jerk strap and floor it. The jerk strap will stretch and then recoil. Very cool straps. Tow Rope, M-P Super-Yanker Kinetic Tow Rope

But if you're hell bent on getting another tow strap, get a nice one. 2" x 30' is good. I would not go with the 3".

EE sells some really nice straps. EE also includes a chafe guard with their straps that really comes in handy and adds life to your strap. https://www.expeditionexchange.com/straps/

Wow never heard them called jerk straps, interesting....

But yeah you won't get a snatch strap for a "cheap price", at least in my book. The same 2"x30' $25 tow strap is $55 as a snatch strap, $30 difference. I guess if you like doing through the bottomless thick goey slop mud it would be worth the $30, but in most cases on rocks/normal mud a tow strap would suffice.

First of all, why would you? They cost more. What are you gaining by going to a 3" strap? Is the 2" not strong enough? Do you think you're going to break a 2" strap?

The 2" is plenty strong.

Second, a tow strap is designed to stretch a little. They do not stretch as much as a jerk strap, but they do stretch. This stretch is important as it softens the tug. For the weight of our vehicles, a 2" strap is recommended.

Some people claim that a 3" strap is more flexible; it will suffice for your own vehicle, plus it's a good size for bigger vehicles. That's bullshit. Your recovery bag should be built for your vehicle, not for someone else.

For example, my recovery back includes:
1 - 2" x 30' tow strap
1 - 1" x 20' yanker rope
1 - 3/8" x 15' g70 chain
2 - 3" x 6' tree straps
2 - snatch blocks
6 - 3/4" bow shackles
and a pair of leather gloves

everything packs nicely into a Bucket Boss bag. When I need to do a recovery, I can just grab my bag and know I'll have everything I need.

Is there any sense in me packing everything I'd need to recover a Suburban? I think the guy in the Suburban should have his own recovery bag...

As Hank alluded to, you need to be clear what you want. Do you want a two strap for towing a disabled vehicle? If that's what you need, then yes, 2" is fine. I prefer them at least 20' long so if the person I'm towing doesn't react quick on the brakes they don't ram me.
If the shop you went in you asked for a tow strap, what they showed you was fine.
If you want a recovery strap, you want something bigger and higher load capacity.

i said recovery strap. I don't need to tow anyone. i need to "recover" people lol.

and i dont want a strap any shorter than 20' either. i'd prefer a 30' strap like i got now....

If you can't find what you need, let me know. I have Northern and Tractor Supply both close, so I could always pick one up and mail it to you.
