Default Diff Lock on a 1999 Disco 1

I have a question about the diff lock on a 1999 disco1, its the mechanical kind, where you engage it via the transfer lever.

I thought it locked all 4 wheels to turn in unison, yest when I engage it and the light comes on if I hit a slippery spot and one wheel loses traction, it spins while the others remain still.

Is it broken,or is this the way its meant to work. It seems to work well, if all4 wheels have traction, but as soon as one of the wheels get off the ground that wheel spins not transferring power to the other 3 wheels.

If someone could clear this up I would be much appreciative.

Thanks
Ryan

The diff lock you are talking about is for the t/case, not the diffs. If you need additional traction then you may won't to add a front or rear locker to one of you open factory diffs.

The center diff only makes the drive shafts turn in unison, not all the wheels.

If you have the center diff locked and one wheel spins the other wheel on the same axle will be useless, but since the center diff lock splits the power 50/50 front and rear, the other axle will still provide motion as long as both wheels have traction. If one of the wheels on the other axle looses traction, then you're stuck.
Sometimes lightly applying the brakes to slow the spinning wheels will get you going again.

WHY??? Some new parts are getting harder to find and more expensive. You can buy good guaranteed used parts for a fraction of the price.
