Default Does anybody off-road with 18" wheels?

I just lifted my Disco II 3" and want to get some more meat on the wheels. I have a dillema, I want mud terrain tires but I'm not sure If i should get new wheels in the 16" size. I know the advantages of having 16" wheels is the tire cost and broad range of tires, but is there anything else?

well you can air down a 16" tire more than an 18" do to the increased profile of the tire. The 18" tire sizes have a lower profile sidewall which allows for less conformation to the contours of the obstacles being traversed.

make sense? i definitely didn't use the right lingo, but i hope you get the idea.

Question for you, I see you have the destination m/t.... do you like them? If I stick with the 18s it will have to be a 275/70R18. That leaves me the choice of the Firestone Destination M/T or Dunlop Rover M/T Maxx Traction. What would be the diameter of the tire for that profile? Thanks.

A 275/70/18 would have a rolling diameter of 33.2 in.

Here is a link to a good tire size calculator.

They're great tires. Definitely the destinations over the dunlop.

Good stuff. I have decided to get the 275/70R18 Firestone Destination M/T. I would rather get 16"s but I'll stick with the 18"s for now. Tire rack has them for $216 a piece but I should be able to get them wholesale.
Thanks all for the replys, btw Jupiter your rover is very nice! It's exactly how I want my 03 to look. Gotta get that CDL too.

As a general rule, 18's are really bad off road, they don't last long, have weak sides and are prone to rock punchures, cost more then 16's and you can't get nearly the selection of tire treads in 18's as you can on 16's.
Trade your wheels and get a good set of 16's, you'll never look back.
By the way, what year is your D2?

I have an 03 D2 with the stock "Hurricane" wheels. I tried to find somebody to trade me for some 16s but nobody wants to. I was looking for the 16" 03-04 Disco "S" 6 spoke. Do you know anybody who wants some 18s?

those are the best looking rims imo. this is probably the only place you find them.2003-2004 Discovery II Wheel - 16 inch throw your hurricanes on flea bay. they seem to be the most wanted in the 18" variety.

Thanks guys. I found somebody on craigslist selling some d2 running boards and saw his 03 Discovery "S" with the 16" wheels in the background, called him up and did the wheel swap today. I did have to buy his running boards though, part of the deal. On eBay they go!

So now the question is about tires. I want to go with a 33" tire so that leaves me with a few options in the m/t category. The Firestone Destination look pretty attractive but so do the Dunlop mud rovers (and they are cheaper). Any tire brands I should avoid?

Only thing you should keep in mind is the Dunlop Mud Rovers and other bargain mud tires usually 1.)Wear quicker and 2.)Have weaker sidewalls. But again you get what you pay for. They are a value for their price, but they won't be on par with name brand tires.

Good one.16"s is more powerful in compare to the others as it is more long lasting and of high performance.
