Talking what is your preferred winch for your Land Rover?

I was thinking about the guy who was thinking about the winch or locker, and that's why I figured I would ask this. So........
What winch do you think is best for your Land/Range Rover? Personally I am a fan of the MileMarker 12k, that's what I have, but it's also the only one I have ever had or used...... It was <$600 that's why I bought it.... Feel free to share some knowledge about winch's, like what makes them so expensive and all the other jazz....... Happy Rovering!

Jeep Articles / General (Winches In Hell - The Numbers) - MoabJeeper Magazine

here is a cool article it compares Warn, Superwinch, and Chicago Electric Winches under different circumstances.

I like MileMarker too...I always wanted to try one of their hydraulic winches.

Is it me or is Warn really overpriced?

I agree Warn is way overpriced..... I get annoyed that the Land Rover Magazines only seem to sell Warn..... Warn is so expensive that I never thought I could even own a winch, then Larry at RoverTym told me check out the MileMarker 12k.... SO glad that he mentioned it. Chicago? I know nothing about those, sounds like a knock off brand

MileMarker sucks. They're a disposable winch just like Cummings, T-Maxx, Chicago, and Magnum. They'll "work" for 4-5 years, then quit. When they die, you just buy another winch - it's cheaper then fixing your old one.

Warm makes some shit, too, so buying something with WARN written on it does not guarantee you a good winch. Either does Ramsey.

If you want something to last you a lifetime, get a Huskey10. You'll never kill it. It will be the last winch you'll ever buy. But they're slow as shit and cost a ton.

Unless you can work a deal on a Warn Ti winch, or score a Huskey, I'd look at Superwinch and call it a day.

SIIa/SIII's - Warn 8274 - mine's pulling along, bought new in 1974
D90 - Recently bought an 8274 for it
SIIa 109 - Koenig PTO
Disco - Ramsey RE10000. Bought used for $200 about 8 years ago. Very good but slow
A PTO hydraulic would be very nice and is probably what I'll put on my other 109.

Overall I prefer worm drive winches, the 8274 being the exception which is spur gear. Not a fan of planetary gear driven.

I have a 9000 something on my 110, and I think my wifes sewing machine has a better gearbox. It hasn't failed, but I've never worked it excessively hard. I have a 12K planetary Ramsey on the front of my 109, and if you wanted a mountain moved, I think it's up to it. It's very smooth, quite fast in comparison to a planetary, but it's very heavy. I'm gonna guess and say it's over 80 pounds, but there's alot to theory that the mass equates to ability. I too think I'd get a Superwinch if I replace the front bumper on the 110. ARB isn't what I'd hoped for.

My MileMarker is 98lbs I think. I remember when I bought it that it was nearly 100lbs which worried me since the weight is sitting in front of my axel. My train of thought was that a 12k winch would barely be working to get me out of most of my dilemas...... I heard from a guy on another forum that his Warn sat in a field for 20 years, and when he plugged it in, it worked, that is amazing to me.

I've got a Warn XD9000i and put it through hell and back. Its never failed. I've never heard of one failing. And if it does, the beauty of Warn is theres dealers everywhere.

However, they are EXPENSIVE for some reason. I didnt pay a whole lot for mine, as it was used (and years old too when I bought it). A Gent here has a T-Max 9000 lbs winch hes had as long as I've had my Warn. Hes had no trouble with it and uses it just about everytime he goes out. I think he only paid $650USD.

How did it loose 2lbs? Did you put it on a diet? I just looked up my Ramsey; 137lbs. shipping wgt.

I'm sure a Warn made 20 years ago was a higher quality winch. That said, they have always had a good motor, and their solinoids are sealed so standing up to weather for 20 years should not be so surprising. It's their planetary that is cheap today. It's two thin steel plates held together with skimpy rivets. Their pinion gear, on the motor end is smaller than your pinky. To get a higher rating, they simply stack more planetarys, but it's the same motor, hence the painfully slow retrieve.

Anything thing made 20 years ago was better if for no other reaso, there was less plastic in them.
I run a 7 year old Warm 9500HSI and I would never replace it, it is fast, doesn't overheat and pulls like a mule.
As for the first post and his desire for a 12,000 pounder, that is really over kill for a 5000 pound truck. Anything in the 9000 pound range is more then adequate.

If you are buying a winch there are two things to look at. Firstly look at what they are rated at with 4 or 5 layers on the drum. Manufacturers claiming 12,000 is only on the first layer and you tend not to do too much winching like that. Secondly look at their line speed. Crap winches can still pull a reasonable weight if they are geared low enough, but they are slow
